I apologize to anyone who didn’t want an in-depth explanation of how a lot of TV broadcasts work…

I had no idea all of the stations cut their own show! — When Formula 1 goes to its various races, the host country is responsible for the whole video feed. Everybody gets one cut. I (stupidly) assumed the same for POTUS.
Yeah, it’s actually pretty common to do things like this.
While I’m being extremely geeky about this sort of thing, everyone should become aware that there’s at least two different production teams who work on the Superbowl, one (or possibly more, I don’t know if local stations do their own coverage) for the game and one for the halftime show. These used to be done out of one production truck and people used to just scramble around for halftime (anyone who knows/knows of Don Mischer will probably find this image to be funny), but they’ve begun getting two trucks these days. There’s also a local and a national broadcast for the 4th of July Boston Pops Fireworks. A lot of sporting events (I know the Celtics for sure, so probably the Bruins too) have local and national trucks that have two separate broadcasts.
But yeah. the SOTU is especially interesting because it’s all the same shot options at the same time, with different directors doing different cuts with them.
Annnd I’ll stop geeking out now. Really this time.
