I could literally write a novel about all the wonderful things my dad does and about all the sacrifices he’s made for me. I won’t here and now, but I could.

My dad is pretty much legendary. He has more friends than any person I’ve ever met, and truly cares about them all and knows all the details of their lives. My friends think he’s epic and he somehow remembers all their names and details and asks me how they are. His jokes are legendarily corny, but also still somehow funny. He likes puns, too. A week after spinal surgery, the fitbit I bought him for Chanukkah informed us that he had walked 5,000 steps that day. What?!

From that time he saved a burn victim at a hotel in Alaska to the time he fixed up a woman who walked through a plate glass window at a museum in Wyoming to that time he helped a heart attack victim at a restaurant in New York, I grew up thinking my dad was pretty much a super hero.

Basically, my dad is awesome and deserves the greatest Father’s Day in the whole world.

(Bonus picture of my grandma, who is turning 90 this week. She looked fabulous 22 years ago (She was 68 there! Incidentally, I was terrified of her as a baby- check out Itty Bitty Emma’s expression.) and looks fabulous now.)

Okay. I promise I won’t post every video I have of people directing anything on here. But here’s one more from the Boston Pops.

This one is extra cool because you can hear the score reader counting beats/measures in the background. Your average director and AD probably don’t read orchestral scores, so a score reader is employed on the Pops show so they know exactly what section of instruments comes in when. Cool.

I’ve seen the video of Glenn Weiss directing the opening of the Tonys floating around so I figured I’d share my video of him directing “Shipping Up to Boston” performed by the Boston Pops and Dropkick Murphys at the Boston Pops Fourth Of July Fireworks Spectacular last year.

I was the truck PA on the show and it was by far the most amazing thing ever - the show started live, then went to the tape of the dress rehearsal due to weather, then came back to the host for a live hit, back to tape, and then it stopped raining and we came back live for the rest of the show. No one at home had any idea. Glenn (and his producing partner, Ricky Kirshner) is that good.

I saw Superman last night. I thought it was very entertaining and the acting was spot-on, but the film was by no means as incredible as other recent superhero movies. This article is an excellent, brief history of the franchise that doesn’t have any spoilers of the new movie.

One thing I think we all can agree upon is Henry Cavill is phoaaaaaaaaar.

I promised twitter I’d stop, but I have a lot of thoughts on this topic, so all y’all get to listen to them.

This is the first time ever that women have swept the directing category in the Tonys and I just feel like everyone should know how awesome that is. While I don’t think I want to be a director when I “grow up” anymore, I’d still describe myself as a directing enthusiast and across all mediums women are terribly underrepresented in directing. Hopefully amazing achievements like this will inspire more young women to pursue directing - these sorts of milestones and successes just prove that anything is possible.

Congrats to Diane Paulus and Pam MacKinnon on their Tony Awards!

“Hey, aren’t you the scientist?”

The voice calls out on a bustling Manhattan sidewalk. Neil deGrasse Tyson—celebrity astrophysicist and director of New York City’s Hayden Planetarium—whirls around, looking for its source. He sees a disheveled homeless man with a piercing stare.

“Yes, I guess I am,” says Tyson, MA ’83. “What can I do for you?”

“I’ve seen you on TV,” the man replies. “I just want to know—how exactly would a black hole kill a person?”

So Tyson launches into a quick account of spaghettification, or the way extreme gravitational forces near a black hole would stretch a human body from head to toe—like a skinny pasta noodle—until its very atoms would be wrenched apart. “A black hole is a one-way trip,” he is fond of saying. “You ain’t coming out.”

Perhaps no other scientist in the world is so famous that even someone lacking basic shelter stops him on the street to ask a technical question. But Neil deGrasse Tyson, 53, is like no other scientist. More than anyone else living today, he is the public face of his entire field.

You may not know his name, but you’ve seen him on CNN, ABC, The Colbert Report, The Tonight Show, Jeopardy!, or even Stargate Atlantis. TIME named him one of the 100 most influential Americans; People gave him the inimitable title of “Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive.” And when his new show debuts on FOX next year, Tyson will be exposed to his widest audience yet.

“People stop me on the street all the time,” Tyson says. “Taxi drivers, janitors, businessmen. It doesn’t matter who you are—it’s human nature to ask deep questions about the universe. To look up and wonder what’s out there. And I’m happy to talk about it.”

Connecting with such a prominent alumnus could be huge for The University of Texas. This is even truer because Tyson is African-American, and UT has long had a troubled relationship with the black community. But Tyson is not exactly UT’s biggest fan. That’s because he and the University had a bad break-up—one that prompts tricky questions about how academia defines success. As we’ll see, his time at UT is the one thing Tyson doesn’t like to talk about.
